Topic description:

If nociceptors are present, pain is possible, so it behooves us to prevent and ameliorate it, even if we don’t understand how pain behaviors may manifest in reptiles. Learn about nociceptive neurophysiology and loco-regional analgesia in this under-studied class of animals.

Objectives:

• Review pain neurophysiology and how reptiles’ nervous system has analogous structures to mammals
• Gain understanding of data related to expression of pain behaviors in reptiles
• Learn safe administration of local anesthetics for local and regional analgesia
